Ahkia

High content wolfdog

Born: 1999 estimated

During the spring of 2003 we became involved in a rescue in Indiana. We had taken in Tok from a backyard breeder, but we had been unsuccessful in rescuing any of the adult wolfdogs the woman owned and used for breeding. By July, 2004 the breeder admitted she was in over her head and we were asked if we could make room for Ahkia and her brother Mofassa.

Upon our arrival in Indiana we found both animals were dehydrated and severely malnourished. We were told Ahkia was missing a large portion of her muzzle from a fence fight with a German Shepherd. In general, both animals were in horrible condition.

Ahkia and Mofassa both tested positive for heartworm and had to undergo a lengthy treatment process before they were given a clean bill of health.

Today, Ahkia is happy and healthy.

By the time we arrived at the sanctuary they were ready to stretch their legs.

One by one Ahkia greeted her new caregivers and investigated her new surroundings.

Then she began to scent roll to mark her new territory.

At least the smaller cage led to some positive bonding with humans.

After three long months both Ahkia and Mofassa were finally heartworm free and had gained enough muscle strength to be relocated to a larger habitat.

Both Mofassa and Ahkia are happy and healthy today.

Ahkia has now learned to trust humans again.
