Ursa

Mixed breed dog

Born: 1999

In the spring of 2004 we were contacted by Underdog Rescue in Los Angeles, CA.   They believed they had rescued a coydog from the Los Angeles pound a year before. Ursa had been captured by Animal Control and had given birth to a litter while still in the shelter. But Ursa was so unsocial and untrusting that she could not be placed.  They had made some headway with Ursa, but they still could not touch her and didn't feel she was social enough to place in a private home. Ursa needed a home. At the time we declined to take her as we had no room.

In August 2004 Underdog Rescue had still been unable to locate an appropriate home for Ursa and the rescuer was under time restraints to get her placed. This time we said yes and they arranged to have her flown to us.

The transport petrified poor Ursa and it took her a few days to settle in. When she was ready we introduced Ursa to Nacona, but the size difference between the two seemed to intimidate Ursa, so then we tried her with Maya and Tucson. The two were much closer to her size and the three formed their own little pack.

She is still very wary of humans, but does allow some contact. She happily greets people when it means feeding time and doesn't hesitate to take food from our hands, but she doesn't feel comfortable being petted so we avoid forcing the issue. But she comes running when new toys are being offered!
